Restaurants and Entertainment

guglhupf05Restaurants in Durham have always attracted patrons from all over the Triangle and several have received national recognition. The revival of Downtown Durham, however, has made Durham the foodie capital of the Triangle if not the Southeast.

Distinctive Properties favorites include Nana’s just west of the Forest Hills neighborhood in the Rockwood Shopping Center. Nationally recognized chef Scott Howell presides. Nana’s anchors a growing little restaurant district that rivals downtown. There’s the Thai Cafe for authentic Thai cuisine, NanaTacos for casual Mexican, The Boot for Italian and the Q Shack for great barbecue. A little further west on Chapel Hill Blvd, is Fosters Market for great sandwiches, baked goods and carryout meals, Guglehopf, a German themed restaurant and bakery, the Refectory for excellent salads and organic entrees.

Back to Ninth Street you have Parisade, the Mad Hatter, breakfast favorite, Elmo’s Diner and Blu Seafood. Don’t miss the Cosmic Cantina for Mexican. A block or so away is Watts Grocery.Cheddar20Burger20DSC_0174

Brightleaf still has an interesting mix of eateries including Parker and Otis, El Rodeo and Mount Fuji but much of the new action is Downtown. Favorites there are Beyu Grill, the Federal, Rue Cler, Dos Peros, and the Piedmont  Just north in the Central Park area you have Fullsteam Brewery, the Blue Note Grill and Motorco. The Central Park area is also the site of Durham’s primary farmers market although there are others that are competing to fill the need for locally sourced organic foods.  Downtown has also become a popular spot for music and art. Motorco is probably the most dedicated to music but there are others.

Okay, we give up. There really is too much to keep track of and try to be good real estate agents to. If you want to explore this more thoroughly the best place to do it is on the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau’s website. The list of restaurants there runs well over 600 including food trucks, an active part of Durham’s food scene. Click here for the complete directory on this excellent website.
